CANCELLED Open Tower Day: visit six towers in Zuidas

On Saturday, 21 March 2020, you can reach amazing heights during Open Tower Day. There are 21 towers to visit in Amsterdam in total. Zuidas is also doing its bit, with six towers open to the public.

Update 13 March 2020

This event has been cancelled.

From 10.00 to 16.00, the towers at ABN AMRO, Crowne Plaza Amsterdam, The Edge and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) will be accessible free of charge. Interested in finding out about everything that’s happening in Zuidas? Then why not take a look at our model on the 23rd floor of ABN AMRO? We’ll explain all about the developments you can see through the window.

Carillon, architecture

At VU University, you can visit the carillon, the book depots and the roof terrace. On the same day ABN AMRO is also organising an art and architecture guided tour and you can find out more about the bank’s extraordinary, circular pavilion, Circl, during your visit. However, for these extra guided tours, you will need to register. This also applies for nhow Amsterdam RAI hotel, that is taking part for the first time, and the Marathon tower on the edge of Zuidas. Registration is possible from 12.00 on 8 March.

Idea

The Open Tower Day is the brainchild of Henri van Poll. How did he come up with the idea? ‘In 2012, I was still living in the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood and had a view of the Zuiderkerk from my window. Every day, I could see lots of tourists climbing the tower. That inspired me to organise something for the people of Amsterdam who have seen the Marathon tower or The Edge from a distance for years and would now like to visit these towers for themselves and enjoy the views. I also wanted Open Tower Day to give the people of Amsterdam a special opportunity to get to know parts of the city that they don’t often visit.’ Van Poll’s enthusiasm was shared by the City of Amsterdam as well as several modern and historic towers. This led, in 2013, to the very first Open Tower Day, which then had 12 towers taking part and some 3,500 visitors. ‘Last year, the seventh time it was held, there were 12,000.’

Good to know

Visiting the 21 towers is free of charge, with the exception of the A’DAM Tower, where you will get a € 5 discount on the normal admission fee. There’s no need to wear any special safety clothing. And – definitely worth knowing – visitors can also take part in a contest. The prize-winner will be the person who submits the funniest, most attractive or entertaining video or photograph as their entry for the competition by 23:59 on 4 April. You can find more information about Open Tower Day on this website.

We look forward to seeing you on the 23rd floor of the ABN AMRO offices.
