In the period from 21 August until 20 October 2023, we are connecting the new VU Amsterdam research building to the water supply and sewerage system. We will also be adding a strip of green next to the building. Various diversions will be in force during the work.
As 2023 progresses, construction work on the VU Amsterdam research building is continuing, with a focus on the extraordinary inside of the building. The first work will be on the interior of the laboratories and offices on the upper floors. The cellar and ground floor will follow later.
Exactly 50 years ago, on 12 April 1973, the VU Main Building opened its doors at De Boelelaan 1105. With a floor area of around nine hectares, it was one of Amsterdam’s largest and tallest buildings. There was not yet a trace of Zuidas to be seen.
The exterior walls of Vrije Universiteit’s new Research Building are now windtight and watertight. The structure along the side of the building which protects cyclists and pedestrians from any falling building materials can now also be removed. Work will also begin on fitting out the laboratories inside the building.
Work on VU University’s Research Building is progressing very rapidly, and the building’s highest point of 57 metres has now been reached. That means the initial phase of construction for this special building in the Kenniskwartier is now complete. One section of the building will be vibration-free.
As the Research Building gradually becomes taller, Paul Goossens from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) explains how this building could play a key role in identifying a genuine Rembrandt and in the quest for new medical applications and energy sources.

At the end of 2019, the Vrije Universiteit (VU Amsterdam) proudly presented its new university building, the buzzing and hospitable heart of the campus in De Boelelaan. That pride is still felt – and with good reason. But, because of coronavirus, the Science Faculty is not buzzing yet.
Along De Boelelaan and next to SC Buitenveldert football club, the Vrije Universiteit (VU Amsterdam) will start construction of a new research building this year. In March and April 2020, we will be doing various works in preparation.
