The first plants in Valley’s vertical valley were planted a year ago. So, how is all this greenery developing? We joined the landscape gardener to take a look. ‘It will still take about another four or five years before it’s all fully grown.’
‘Sapiens’ is coming to Valley. According to the initiators of the project – Hogeschool Inholland, Naturalis Biodiversity Centre and VU University Amsterdam – Sapiens will be a 'creative centre for the Anthropocene'. A museum, workshop and debate centre all rolled into one.
Next to the southern entrance to Valley, the first piece of Maurice Ravellaan is now in place. This avenue will be the access route to the new Ravel residential neighbourhood. A crossroads has now appeared where Mahlerlaan previously formed a T-junction with Beethovenstraat.
Valley is now virtually complete. Developer EDGE and the Valley construction consortium have successfully built a multifunctional building that will give Zuidas a new look. Hundreds of construction workers have spent around three and a half years working on it. Below is a visual retrospective.
Valley, the iconic building that is nearing completion, is an architectural tour de force. Digital computer models have made a vital contribution to that. Arup subjected the design to tests that included such factors as daylight, hours of sun and privacy.
Architect Winy Maas is not pulling any punches: the design for Valley also includes a critique of the classic Zuidas. ‘The reflective glass panels are a reference to the inaccessible Zuidas of old. The green valley that breaks through, that represents the Zuidas of the future.’
Valley is gradually taking shape – the unique design is increasingly making its mark on the horizon. The Valley Amsterdam construction consortium recently published a video focusing on the building worker.
Valley has now become an unmissable eye-catcher in Zuidas. In mid-June, an extraordinary job was on the schedule. The Valley construction consortium started work hanging and fitting seven large protruding parts onto the building. Our photographer was on hand to capture it.
The builders working on the Valley project are currently working on both the shell of the building and on the interior. ‘Under the current circumstances, it’s pretty remarkable that our team of 150 is still working as normal’, says site manager Ruud van der Thiel.
