Central parcel pick-up points in Zuidas

Research shows that a considerable amount of the traffic in Zuidas is made up of people delivering parcels. Green Business Club Zuidas is working on a central delivery and pick-up point for parcels. Its plans also involve the use of MyPup electric cargo bikes.

VU Amsterdam research building has diaphragm walls

A huge hole, with construction workers hard at work with reinforcement steel and concrete. This is what can currently be seen of the new VU Amsterdam Research Building. The huge diaphragm walls that will soon protect the building from vibration are also now in the ground.

Platform-widening work continues despite curfew

In spite of the curfew, we are once again working between the railway and metro tracks at Amsterdam Zuid station. Until 4 February 2021, we are preparing work for the widening of the platform for railway tracks 3 and 4.

Much more construction work to come in the Kop Zuidas area

In the Kop Zuidas area, the Zuidoever and SUD buildings were completed last summer, and the construction of Terrace Tower is largely complete too. But there are many more buildings yet to come in the most north-easterly section of Zuidas. Here are a few examples.

The Burgerweeshuis – ‘intricate like lacework’

‘If ever any building was designed with care and attention to every detail, this is it.’ The words of the architect Herman Hertzberger, writing about the creation of his colleague Aldo van Eyck. Built as a children’s home in the 1960s, the Burgerweeshuis only just managed to evade demolition.

Demolition work starts on old AFC clubhouse

The relocation of Goed Genoeg sports park, with AFC as its main tenant, is almost complete. There is just one more pitch to be relocated. The old clubhouse also needs to be demolished. Work on that started on 20 January 2021. It's a bitter-sweet moment.

Kindercampus Zuidas allocated new site in Ravel district

Kindercampus Zuidas education centre has been allocated a new site in the future Ravel residential district. This has been agreed between the Public Education Foundation Stichting Openbaar Onderwijs aan de Amstel and the City of Amsterdam. It marks the first step in setting up the school in the new district.

Stricter rules for bicycles and scooters around Mahlerlaan

Your bicycle will be removed if you leave it in the street. Around Mahlerplein, scooters parked anywhere except within the designated parking spaces will be ticketed and fines will be issued. Amsterdam Zuid local council plans to introduce these rules later this year, following years of complaints.

Europahal, prime example of New Objectivity

After some early teething troubles, the ‘New RAI’ opened its doors in 1961. The Europahal was a symbol heralding a new age. In 2015, the building was given national monument status, together with the advertising column Het Signaal.

Plants and seating in Claude Debussylaan

We are making Claude Debussylaan greener. We are adding some large clay containers full of plants and around 60 natural stone ‘pouffe stools’ where you can sit and enjoy a bite to eat. The work will take two weeks, starting from 16 January 2021.

On 11 January 2021, we began redevelopment work on the southern section of Mahlerplein. Assistant project manager Doeke Brouwers: ‘It marks a great start to the new year and the end result will already be visible by March.’

Arrival of McDonald’s disappoints residents

McDonald’s is set to open a branch on the ground floor of The Gustav in Mahlerlaan. The Zuid city district received over 80 objections, but it sees no legal grounds for preventing it. Local residents are not taking the decision lying down.
