Alongside the 216 starter homes in Stepstone, Ceci is being built, a complex of 25 private sector apartments with a minimum size of 70 square metres. There will be commercial amenities on the ground floor. Ceci is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
Kenniskwartier (Knowledge District) is developing fast. VU Campus is being regenerated, around 2,700 homes are set to be built and there are new amenities and green areas under development along with a thriving centre for research and education. All of this in what will soon be an amazingly accessible location.
In the weekend of 16 and 17 December 2023, we made modifications to the entrance to the emergency department of Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc. The entrance is now wider and easier to navigate, making it much safer, especially for cyclists and pedestrians.
From a patchwork of paving to a green oasis. The campus square at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) is currently undergoing a metamorphosis, which is set to make it the heart of the campus once again. ‘We were assigned the job of making the square more attractive. That’s not too difficult.’
In the space of 18 months, The Pulse of Amsterdam has been transformed from a construction pit to an eyecatcher in the making. Alongside the A10, the two towers in this megaproject have shot out of the ground like mushrooms. Time for an update on construction progress.
The homebase for the emergency helicopter serving Amsterdam UMC, VUmc location, is moving to the western harbour area on 19 July 2023. The helipad on the roof of the VUmc will be maintained for the time being, but the number of flights will be significantly reduced.
Exactly 50 years ago, on 12 April 1973, the VU Main Building opened its doors at De Boelelaan 1105. With a floor area of around nine hectares, it was one of Amsterdam’s largest and tallest buildings. There was not yet a trace of Zuidas to be seen.
In February 2023, the maximum permitted speed in Gustav Mahlerlaan-West will be reduced from 50 km/h to 30 km/h. This will make this section of the Kenniskwartier between the Vrije Universiteit and Parnassusweg somewhat safer, before around 500 new homes are built there in the near future.
The exterior walls of Vrije Universiteit’s new Research Building are now windtight and watertight. The structure along the side of the building which protects cyclists and pedestrians from any falling building materials can now also be removed. Work will also begin on fitting out the laboratories inside the building.
The crossing over the road and tramlines in Parnassusweg has now been completed. This means that pedestrians heading from Amsterdam Zuid in the direction of VU Amsterdam can now avoid the busy junction between Buitenveldertselaan and De Boelelaan.
It’s a real inconvenience: Gustav Mahlerlaan is rudely interrupted by a tram line right next to Parnassusweg. In the period between 17 October and 2 December, we will be adding a new crossing to connect both halves of Gustav Mahlerlaan.
Five streets and squares in the ‘Kenniskwartier’ (Innovation District, sometimes referred to as Knowledge Quarter) are being given the names of female composers. The open-air concert held on 15 September 2022 paid tribute to some of them. Despite the autumn weather, there was plenty to enjoy in Mahlerplein.
