Between PI59, formerly home to the Amsterdam International Community School (AICS), and the law firm Freshfields, we have plans to create a pocket park. We are eager to do this in consultation with the local neighbourhood. Will you contribute your ideas?
The old Strawinskyhuis in Prinses Irenestraat is now virtually unrecognisable. At the heart of what was once a brutalist complex, there now lies a bright and airy atrium. The building is not yet fully complete: work on it is expected to last until the end of the year.
All that remains of the brutalist complex at Prinses Irenestraat 59 is its bare carcase. This 1970s building is being thoroughly refurbished before Philips moves into it in 2025. So, how is construction progressing?
Since the end of October 2022, there have been sounds of demolition hammers at work in Prinses Irenestraat as the plasterwork and several floors in the former Amsterdam International Community School (AICS) are being demolished. The work will last until mid-December at the latest.
The owner of the WTC, CBRE IM, has plans to renovate and extend the WTC Amsterdam. A meeting is being held on 11 July 2022 to discuss the plans with local residents. You are welcome to attend in the WTC auditorium.
WTC’s Tower Ten has now reached such an advanced stage that the contractor is set to hand back the public space to the City of Amsterdam in May. So, what plans do we have for it? We will be adding a range of planting, widening the cycle path and making it an attractive place in which to spend time. We present an initial impression below.
After six months of demolition work, the contractor du Prie is now ready to start work on the new glass exterior of the Strawinskyhuis. The first plates of glass will soon be put into place. ‘It will be a radical transition – from dark and closed, to light and open.’
The owner of WTC Amsterdam, CBRE Investment Management, is conducting a masterplan study on the long-term future structure of the entire WTC complex. This means that the extension work on towers A and B will not be happening, at least for now.
With work now finished on the 2Amsterdam office tower, the transformation of one of the oldest buildings in Zuidas is complete. Although the former Twin Towers no longer both serve as offices, they still unmistakably form a single unit.
Architect Ron Bakker (of PLP Architecture) knows Zuidas like the back of his hand. In 1996, he sketched the master plan for the WTC building. He also designed Tower Ten, which is currently under construction. And now he is working on a possible further expansion for the complex.
The renovation of the Strawinskyhuis, a new look for the building at number 59, and the extension of the green strip that helps capture stormwater. These are the exciting new projects that will be happening along Prinses Irenestraat between June 2021 and the end of 2024.
