VU Amsterdam's campus square undergoes metamorphosis

From a patchwork of paving to a green oasis. The campus square at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) is currently undergoing a metamorphosis, which is set to make it the heart of the campus once again. ‘We were assigned the job of making the square more attractive. That’s not too difficult.’

Emergency helicopter moves homebase out of Zuidas

The homebase for the emergency helicopter serving Amsterdam UMC, VUmc location, is moving to the western harbour area on 19 July 2023. The helipad on the roof of the VUmc will be maintained for the time being, but the number of flights will be significantly reduced.

VU Main Building marks 50th anniversary

Exactly 50 years ago, on 12 April 1973, the VU Main Building opened its doors at De Boelelaan 1105. With a floor area of around nine hectares, it was one of Amsterdam’s largest and tallest buildings. There was not yet a trace of Zuidas to be seen.

Open-air concert in Mahlerplein proves an autumnal success

Five streets and squares in the ‘Kenniskwartier’ (Innovation District, sometimes referred to as Knowledge Quarter) are being given the names of female composers. The open-air concert held on 15 September 2022 paid tribute to some of them. Despite the autumn weather, there was plenty to enjoy in Mahlerplein.

Attention movie fans: World Cinema Amsterdam in Rialto VU

After a period of restrictions because of coronavirus, the Rialto VU movie theatre is now well and truly in business. From 20 to 27 August 2022, it will be the main venue for World Cinema Amsterdam, the annual festival featuring international movies, many of them by young directors.

OBA NEXT not coming to Zuidas after all

OBA NEXT, the innovative and inspirational location for learning and development, will not be coming to Zuidas after all. This was made clear in the coalition agreement presented by the new municipal council on 25 May 2022. The development will be moved to Amsterdam Zuidoost instead.

Largest social housing project in Zuidas starts

Construction work started on Stepstone on 1 April 2022. Boasting 216 rental apartments for first-timers, this is the largest social housing project so far in Zuidas. In the same neighbourhood, Kenniskwartier (Knowledge District), some 2,700 homes are being built in the years ahead.

Air ambulance moves to Amsterdam Heliport

The permanent base for the air ambulance will move away from the roof of Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc, significantly reducing noise pollution for local residents.

New streets in Zuidas to be named after female composers

They were shunned and unknown during their own lifetimes, but now the names of female composers will add some diversity to the streets of Zuidas. ‘They died sad and lonely – and that’s why now, after all these years, we have to honour their work.’

Three parties invited for OBA NEXT design

An important first step has now been taken in the development of OBA NEXT. Three consortia have been invited to submit designs for the new library and the offices in the Innovation District (‘Kenniskwartier’).

Off to the movies in Rialto VU on De Boelelaan

Since 12 November 2021, the lecture hall benches in the New University Building at De Boelelaan 1111 have been doubling up as a cinema in the evenings. The Rialto movie theatre is showcasing some of the best films for local residents, students, hospital staff and people working in Zuidas.
