Bicycle Park Amsterdam RAI

The mainline station at the eastern tip of Zuidas has undergone a transformation and expansion. The supervised bicycle park has been integrated into the station complex, with room for around 1,800 bikes of different types. It can also now be accessed via the station.

The bicycle park has been modernised and extended with a glass pavilion: a beacon of light between the motorway viaducts and railway tracks. A direct link from the station foyer to the bicycle park adds additional comfort. With its transparent façades, the building has a strong visual link with its surroundings, improving its appearance and making it feel safer and more natural. There are also glass skylights, ensuring natural light can penetrate the bicycle park.

There is a wall covered in photo prints at the end of every corridor. This prevents the paths leading to an annoying ‘dead end’, providing colourful and attractive scenery instead. This is a sustainable project because the bicycle park has been given a second life. It is now being used more efficiently and can remain in service for decades longer. The transformation and expansion of the built volume provides an additional quality boost to the public space in this state-of-the-art area of the centre. The forest of bicycles around the station foyer has now been relocated indoors.
