The Kapel & Convict buildings are located in Beatrixpark in Amsterdam Zuidas. These buildings are municipal monuments and part of the former St. Nicolaaslyceum. The buildings are now used for the temporary shelter of Ukrainian refugees, and will be redeveloped in time.

Kapel & Convict date back to the 1950s and lost their religious role at the end of the last century. It listed as a municipal monument in 2014. The buildings are designated for cultural and/or social use and this zoning will be maintained in the future. According to the current development plans, the buildings will have a public purpose, ensuring that the monumental buildings are accessible to as many people as possible. The most likely designation will be a cultural and/or social use, together with hospitality/catering. There is potential for this to become a high-profile, vibrant place with an innovative use and programming.

Accommodation for Ukrainian refugees

The Convict building has been renovated and prepared for the temporary accommodation of approximately 100 Ukrainian refugees. Due to an unforeseen increase in costs, the renovation work was delayed. The building was put into use in the summer of 2025, and will be used as a shelter for a maximum of five years.

Kapel

Kapel is intended for a cultural and social function, such as a creative incubator or an arts and culture project. It is important that the building plays a role for both the neighborhood and the refugees housed in the adjacent Convict building. Supporting catering facilities are also a possibility. The municipality is currently in discussions with a potential tenant. Further information will follow as soon as more information becomes available.

Tender procedure

The buildings will eventually be redeveloped for social and/or cultural purposes. The municipality will seek a suitable party for this through a tender procedure. Further information will follow at the start of this procedure.
