In the Kenniskwartier (also known as Innovation District), the Innovation Center is under construction, alongside the VU University Research Building in De Boelelaan. The building is specially designed for start-ups and scale-ups in medical technology and life sciences. The start-ups currently accommodated in the StartHub pavilion on the campus will also move into it.
The Innovation Center is being developed by the real estate collective Matrix Innovation Center NV, a joint initiative involving the University of Amsterdam, Rabobank, the City of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). Matrix currently has seven Innovation Centers at Amsterdam Science Park. This Innovation Center in Kenniskwartier is number eighth.
Schedule
The design of the building was completed by the end of 2024. Construction began in September 2025, with work underway on the foundation, topped with a basement containing bicycle storage. Once the groundwork is complete, the building will rise nine stories in two years, starting in the spring of 2026, via the low-rise structure housing the entrance. The building is expected to open its doors in 2026 and at the end of 2027.
