Fred. Roeske
The Fred. Roeske neighbourhood is located next to the Zuider Amstelkanaal and between Parnassusweg to the east Amstelveenseweg to the west. In recent years, the neighbourhood has been developed from an office area to a mixed neighbourhood with offices, housing, schools and amenities.
Named after the musician Fred. J. Roeske, the neighbourhood has the smoke-free Fred. Roeskestraat running right across it, with buildings and amenities for every phase of life on either side.
Schools, housing and offices
There is an after-school daycare centre for small children and (school) students can attend the Geert Groote College and the adjacent, listed building the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Not far away, the De Fred residential building, completed in 2016, features 110 apartments in the private sector. There are also office buildings, including the modern Edge Stadium, fully renovated in 2023. Another listed monument, the R.K. Begraafplaats Buitenveldert cemetery has provided a dignified final resting place for many Amsterdam citizens since 1835.
The neighbourhood has not yet been fully ‘completed’. Right next to De Fred, the 177 social rented homes in The Duet are expected to be taken into use in early 2028, featuring group housing for the elderly and social amenities, such as primary care or a GP on the ground floor. There is also a newly landscaped public area around the building. Finally, we are preparing to relandscape the green banks alongside the Zuider Amstelkanaal and will consult on this with local stakeholders in late 2025, early 2026.
