Mahler
Mahler, located on the south side of Amsterdam Zuid station, is one of Zuidas’s first (residential) neighbourhoods. Although best known for its many office towers, it also includes a lot of housing and amenities. These include hospitality, retail outlets and gyms.
Mahler is in the heart of Zuidas, wedged between the A10 Zuid to the north and Gustav Mahlerlaan to the south. One of the best-known and busiest places in Mahler is undoubtedly Gustav Mahlerplein, where one of the two entrances to the metro and railway platforms at Amsterdam Zuid station is located.
From business district to lively neighbourhood
Gustav Mahlerplein leads to side streets like Claude Debussylaan – lively places, boasting hospitality outlets and housing. There are good reasons why Mahler has played a prominent role in the transformation of Zuidas from a purely business district to a lively neighbourhood with a mixture of functions.
New York architectural styles
The architecture in Mahler takes inspiration from buildings in New York, particularly the upmarket housing dating from the first half of the last century. Obvious examples of this include the fine details of the façade of the 900 Mahler residential tower with its 22 floors.
Continuing development
Although many of the buildings in Mahler were built much earlier, development is still continuing. For example, The CubeHouse is being built on the corner of Claude Debussylaan and Parnassusweg and the ABN AMRO complex in Gustav Mahlerplein (one of the oldest buildings in Zuidas) is being completely transformed in the years ahead. In this location, there are plans to develop Mahler 1, a multifunctional building with a mixture of offices, commercial and social functions, various public amenities and a lively ground floor area.
