The construction of housing, offices and amenities is causing increased demand for electricity across the Netherlands. Efforts to improve the sustainability of the energy supply and the emergence of new technologies are also key factors. The effect of this excessive demand on the electricity network (grid congestion) is becoming increasingly widespread, including in Zuidas. This is why the City of Amsterdam is launching a market consultation to challenge market players to come up with innovative, smart and robust solutions for this grid congestion.

Zuidas as a test case

The market consultation will single out for evaluation two specific (mixed-use) locations in Zuidas where grid congestion is a factor. The City of Amsterdam is inviting a range of players, such as property developers, installation companies, technical service providers in the energy sector and knowledge institutions to come up with ideas on whether and how it might be possible for an energy system to be used to combine different functions at plot/area level. Any findings and new insights will serve as inspiration for solutions in future (construction) developments on a range of plots in Zuidas.

Grid congestion

Grid congestion is putting progress in the construction of housing, offices and/or amenities at risk. However, according to deputy director of area development Dries Drogendijk (City of Amsterdam), it also presents opportunities: ‘While grid congestion has a major impact on housing construction, it also offers opportunities for innovation. I’m calling on market players to come up with recommendations for energy solutions in area development. Who knows, your solution could make a valuable contribution to the energy supply, an essential precondition for area development in Zuidas and elsewhere in the city.’
