Since the 1960s, the RAI complex in Europaplein has been organising trade shows and conferences, forging connections between the different industries. In order to move with the times, the RAI now intends to undergo a thorough modernisation and sustainability upgrade. At the same time, both the RAI and the City of Amsterdam see redevelopment as an opportunity to contribute to the city’s ambitions, in the form of housing, amenities and green areas. Of course, all of this must be able to go hand-in-hand with the RAI’s core activity as an internationally renowned convention centre.

The development of the area will have an impact on everyone associated with the RAI: from local residents to convention attendees to businesses. The RAI is therefore asking interested parties to contribute their ideas on the development of the RAI site. This will enable the RAI to collect ideas and points of concern from the local community and take these into account in planning.

Launch agreement

On 24 October, the RAI and the City of Amsterdam came together to sign what is referred to as a launch agreement. This indicates how the planning for the redevelopment will proceed and who will be responsible for what. Previously, the City of Amsterdam compiled a Memorandum of Principles (Uitgangspuntennota). This includes the municipal policy to which the plans will need to adhere. This Memorandum of Principles was approved by the Amsterdam City Executive on 16 July 2024 and can be found using the link here.
