Every minute was put to use during the weekend closure of 27-30 March. As soon as the road connecting the A10 Zuid to the A10 West was closed at 22.00 on Friday evening, construction consortium TriAX (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans) immediately began building a large sand platform. This was needed as a stable base for the heavy cranes, which would lift girders and support beams into place from this position.
Girders and support beams
Work continued throughout the night to complete the first platform within the limited space, after which we were able to lift no fewer than 12 concrete girders into position on Saturday. These girders will later support the road surface of the new flyover connecting the A10 Zuid to the A4. The girders themselves rest on so-called support beams, two of which were also precisely lifted into place.
Severe weather
However, the work did not stop there: during the night of Saturday/Sunday, we removed the constructed platform, only to rebuild it slightly further west. This allowed us to install another 12 large girders (each around 30 metres in length) on Sunday. Despite severe weather during the final night, we succeeded in removing the platform and restoring the surrounding area. The A10 Zuid reopened on Monday morning at 05.00, as planned.
Works at Schinkelbrug
Work also took place at the Schinkelbrug during the weekend. Preparations were made so we will be able to lift girders for the new northern bridge later this month. This included adapting noise barriers and making technical modifications. Earlier this year, we already lifted girders into place for the new southern bridge of the Schinkelbrug.
Flyover and widening of the A10 Zuid
The flyover is part of the reconstruction of the De Nieuwe Meer junction that is needed in order to widen the A10 Zuid by adding two extra lanes for local traffic. In the future, traffic from the city will either use the S108/Amstelveenseweg or the S109/Europaboulevard to reach the new parallel carriageway. Drivers will then be able to take the new flyover from the De Nieuwe Meer junction to reach the A4 Schiphol/Rotterdam.
