The A10 Zuid motorway
The A10 Zuid is one of the busiest motorways in the Netherlands. We are widening the road in order to improve traffic flow and safety. The regeneration of the A10 Zuid includes the reconstruction of the De Nieuwe Meer junction, the reconstruction of the Amstel junction and the tunnels in the centre of Zuidas.
From 4 to 6 lanes
We are widening the A10 Zuid (South) between the De Nieuwe Meer junction and the Amstel junction. To the existing four lanes in each direction, we are adding two new lanes: this will result in a total of six lanes in each direction of travel. We are separating through-traffic from local traffic. For through-traffic, there will be four lanes and there will be two lanes for local traffic (the S108 and S109 access roads and exits).
A10 Zuid diverted into a tunnel
In the centre of Zuidas, the A10 Zuid will be tunnelled to create space for the expansion of Amsterdam Zuid station. The section of motorway between the Buitenveldert cemetery and Beatrixpark will be diverted into a tunnel. This will create space above ground for a state-of-the-art transport hub for trains, metros, buses and trams as well as additional public space.
Improved accessibility
The accessibility of Amsterdam and the wider Randstad is highly reliant on the A10 Zuid. When traffic becomes congested here, this is immediately noticeable on the A4, A9 and A2. The S108 and S109 exit roads regularly become congested during peak periods. Good traffic flow is essential. Separating through-traffic from local traffic can help to improve it. Currently, traffic still needs to cross the road to reach the right lane, causing blockages and dangerous situations. By making these changes we are improving road safety. Above all, we are ensuring that Amsterdam, the Randstad and the Netherlands are more easily accessible.
