Kenniskwartier

In the years ahead, the City of Amsterdam, VU Amsterdam and Amsterdam UMC are transforming the Kenniskwartier neighbourhood into an exciting mixture featuring good housing, employment and study.

In this neighbourhood (on the south side of the A10, between Parnassusweg/Buitenveldertselaan, A.J. Ernststraat and Amstelveenseweg), there will be around 2,700 homes alongside space for education and knowledge-related business, healthcare, culture, shops and hospitality & catering. Boasting The Pulse of Amsterdam, the new ADORE Research and Diagnostic Centrethe Rialto VU cinema and the Stepstone social housing project, Kenniskwartier is set to become a place where housing, interaction, inspiration and knowledge-sharing come together.

Magnet

The main idea behind the development of Kenniskwartier is that students, (young) professionals and academics and scientists thrive best in a bustling, urban setting close to innovative business. This kind of area acts like a magnet, attracting talent, knowledge-intensive start-ups and spin-offs from academic research. The unique innovative climate in Kenniskwartier Zuidas provides a meaningful boost to the economy of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area and the Netherlands as a whole.

Medical-scientific institutes

VU Amsterdam (Vrije Universiteit) and the Amsterdam UMC (location VUmc) are the key pillars of Kenniskwartier’s innovative character. There are some 32,000 students and around 5,000 employees and internationally renowned medical and science institutes in the fields of Human Health & Life Sciences. With such institutes as Alzheimer Centre Amsterdam, Cancer Center Amsterdam, the Imaging Center, the ADORE Research & Diagnostics Centre, the VU Research Building and the Innovation Center, this area is a leading European and global hub for scientific research.

Transformation of the area

In the years ahead, we are working with VU and Amsterdam UMC to transform the Kenniskwartier into a neighbourhood that brings together a wide variety of different functions. Approximately 2,700 homes are being developed, with an emphasis on student housing. There is also plenty of space for hospitality, green areas, sport and culture. All of this will see Kenniskwartier develop into a new, dynamic Amsterdam neighbourhood, where the focus is on interaction, inspiration and knowledge-sharing.
