EMA building reaches highest point

BCEMA, the construction consortium of Dura Vermeer and Heijmans , is constructing EMA’s new headquarters at record speed. The 81 metre building adjacent to the EY offices could easily serve as the backdrop in Lord of the Rings. It is an ‘oddly’ slim, high tower because only the core of the EMA headquarters is currently standing. This part will house the elevator shafts, among other things, and serves as the core around which Dura Vermeer and Heijmans will construct the actual office spaces.

Floor on top of floor

Dozens of building crew ‘poured’ floor on top of floor day and night, seven days a week. They continuously poured the concrete brought up by a crane in special formwork. Concrete mixer trucks went back and forth. After curing, the formwork was lifted up one layer so the next floor could be poured. The building grew by 2.30 metres every day in this way, reaching the twentieth and highest floor in record time: just 35 days.

Steel frame

Now that the core of the EMA building is standing, construction continues apace. The building frame will be constructed from steel to minimise production time. The EMA needs to leave London within six months due to Brexit. Because the new offices won’t be ready by then, the EMA will move into the Spark building near Sloterdijk for a couple of months. The definitive headquarters in Zuidas will be completed in November 2019.
