Applause for healthcare workers as Zuidas grinds to a halt
Zuidas has ground to a halt. All catering establishments and almost all offices have closed. Despite this, on the evening of Tuesday, 17 March, the residents of Zuidas showed some heart-warming signs of life. Hopefully, the staff at Amsterdam University Medical Centre (UMC) were able to hear them.
On any normal day, the streets are busy at lunchtime. If the weather’s not too bad, it’s great to take a breath of fresh air in Mahlerplein and Gershwinplein. Or to take a gentle stroll through Claude Debussylaan. But at lunchtime yesterday, our photographer Jan Vonk found Zuidas empty and deserted.

Emptiness in Parnassusweg
A warning sign in Amsterdam
But still a chance for cycling
A cascading round of applause
In spite of all this, on Tuesday evening, the residents of Zuidas made themselves heard. First, there was the initiative to offer support to the restaurants. Then, at precisely 8 p.m., they showed their support for emergency workers with a cascading round of applause, just like in the rest of the city and the entire country. We also wish all healthcare workers our very best wishes. This, of course, particularly applies to the people at Amsterdam UMC, VUmc location. The offices are closed and even we are working from home. But these Zuidas heroes cannot allow themselves to do that. The video is by photographer Katja Mali.
In Beethovenstraat, Zadelhoff is developing the complex ‘The Harmony’, with 63 social rental homes and 85 mid-market rental homes. They will be part of the new Ravel residential district that is set to be built between the new AFC football pitches and De Boelelaan.
On 12 March 2024, more than 150 people visited the market in the Zuidas-Zuidasdok Information Centre. Alongside many familiar faces, there were also quite a lot of new ones. People with specific questions and people with a general interest in Zuidas and Zuidasdok.
Although there will be nothing on sale, it will definitely be worth the effort coming along to our Information Centre in the WTC on tuesday 12 March 2024. At our market, you will have an opportunity to see, hear about and experience some of the major developments in your neighbourhood. You can even do some speed-dating.
