At 21:01 on the evening of Sunday, 9 February 2025, the first cars were driving from the A10 Zuid onto the A4 again. This was ten hours earlier than anticipated and announced, and was because the scheduled works ran so smoothly. This work included applying a top layer of asphalt, moving a portal gantry (support structure above the road where the blue road signs are) and building a new guardrail.
Top layer of asphalt
During the previous closure (from 31 January until 3 February 2025), the side of the motorway subsided as a result of sheet-piling works. There was then insufficient time to apply the top layer of asphalt and fully repair the damage. We were aware of this in advance and therefore ensured that the situation was temporarily made safe and traffic was able to drive on a single layer in the days between the two weekends. We were able to apply the top layer last weekend. This brings an end to the 70 km/h speed restriction that applied temporarily on the connecting road.
Moving portal gantry
We also moved a portal gantry at the site where the connecting road will ultimately join the A4 from the S108. During the night of 7/8 February 2025, we removed the existing portal gantry and built the foundations for the new one around 250 m to the west. Several piles were inserted into the ground for this purpose. In order to do that work safely, we closed the intersection between the A10 West and the A4 overnight. Traffic was diverted via the S107. The intersection was accessible again by Saturday morning.
Quiet weekend
In the night of 8/9 February, we put the new portal gantry (the steel posts and a beam) in place, after which the signs could be attached to it. At 14:00 on Saturday afternoon, all of the systems were tested and the new portal gantry was put into use. We also put a new guardrail in place and applied new road markings to the fresh asphalt. It remained relatively quiet on the road throughout the weekend and motorists experienced only minimal disruption as a result of the closure. On alternative routes, there was no (major) congestion (with the exception of Saturday evening, because of an accident on the A9).
Weekend works and closures in March 2025
In March 2025, the TriAX construction consortium (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans) will again be working on the De Nieuwe Meer junction during two weekends. From 14 to 17 March and from 21 to 24 March 2025, we are closing the A4 between the Badhoevedorp junction and De Nieuwe Meer. Road users can expect journey times to increase by 30 to 60 minutes. We will of course keep you posted via our website and other channels.
