On 16 May, the North Sea Canal Area Environmental Service granted Eigen Haard the permit to build The Duet: referred to as an environmental permit (previously known as ‘planning permission’). The objections period has now started and anyone with questions or objections can submit these to the Environmental Service by Friday, 27 June.

Open for consultation
The granting of the environmental permit was published on 23 May 2025 in the City of Amsterdam Gazette (het Gemeenteblad van Amsterdam). Anyone who has questions or objections can submit these digitally or by post until 27 June 2025.

Social housing

The Duet will consist of two buildings in Fred. Roeskestraat 94A (previously the location of the British School of Amsterdam) with a total of 177 social rented homes in a park-like environment. The cream-coloured northern building next to the Zuider Amstelkanaal is intended for elderly people, including those with dementia. The pale red building in Fred. Roeskestraat will be for other social tenants.

Design

During a meeting for local residents, a presentation was given about the public space and the provisional design for the buildings. We discussed the special details of the design with the architect Thijs Huisink from ZECC Architecten, who heads up the team responsible for designing The Duet.

Schedule

Construction is expected to start in autumn 2025, with the first tenants moving in by mid-2027. The layout of the public space will be completed last, with the design developed in collaboration with local residents.
