The summer closure of Amstelveenseweg is the first of three long-lasting closures that will be needed in the next few years in order to remodel the viaduct above Amstelveenseweg. This summer, the TriAX construction consortium (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans) will be building five new central supports to enable the widening of the viaduct: two on the north side and three on the south side. This widening is needed for the new lanes on the A10 Zuid.
Piles and footings
Building the supports is a complex process: the foundations need to be made first. To do this, we are temporarily removing sections of the lanes next to the central reservation on Amstelveenseweg. We will then insert a total of 38 piles into the ground on the north and south side of the viaduct. On top of them, we will build two huge underground footings (concrete support structures). The one on the south side will be almost 20 m long, 2.5 m wide and 1.5 m in height, the one on the north side slightly smaller. We will build the supports on top of these. These are made of prefab concrete elements and will have a beam on top of them. When the supports have been completed, we will put everything back in place before resurfacing Amstelveenseweg.
Abutments
But there is more. On the east and west side of Amstelveenseweg, we will be adding a retaining wall structure (next to the embankment). This will consist of steel sheet piles with planks in-between and will reinforce the ground behind it. Later this year – after the summer closure is over – we will then be able to dig here and build abutments. These are the foundation structures on either side of a bridge or viaduct. We can build the abutments after the summer closure, but this is not possible for the retaining wall structures. These can only be inserted safely into the ground if there is no motorised traffic on Amstelveenseweg.
Closures in 2026 and 2027
During the summer closure of 2026, we will be building a roof on the north and south side of the viaduct that will ultimately rest on the supports and abutments. The roof will consist of concrete girders each measuring around 37 m in length. In 2027, we will be working on the junction underneath the viaduct. The layout is being improved: traffic between Amsterdam and Amstelveen will be separated from traffic heading to the A10 Zuid. This will make the situation clearer for drivers. The new S108 access road creates an easy connection, helping to improve traffic flow. The new junction layout will be completed in 2028.
Widening of A10 Zuid
The A10 Zuid, between the Amstel and De Nieuwe Meer junctions, is being increased from four to six lanes in both directions: four of them for through-traffic and two for local traffic. This will make it safer and improve traffic flow. For this purpose, we are building or renovating 14 viaducts in and around the De Nieuwe Meer junction, including the viaduct next to Amstelveenseweg.
