The huge bearer beams will form the supports for the new flyover which will connect the A10 Zuid to the A4. They were prefabricated in the Frisian village of Kootstertille, but transporting them by road was not an option: they are too heavy and too wide. On the morning of Monday, 22 September 2025, they were therefore loaded from the factory onto a pontoon before travelling via the IJsselmeer on a journey that included Utrecht, Gouda and Alphen aan den Rijn to reach the Nieuw Meer lake.

Picturesque autumnal scenes

In Friesland, we fitted a webcam onto the boat so that the entire journey – from the Haitsma Beton factory to our construction site on the river Schinkel – could be viewed live on our website. The stunning weather ensured there were plenty of picturesque Dutch autumnal scenes on the way. It was an extremely smooth journey, although a blockage meant that the vessel spent slightly longer than expected in Frisian waters. The blockage had been caused by a collision some distance away, on the Prinses Margriet Canal.

Coming ashore

As scheduled, the bearer beams arrived at the Nieuw Meer on the afternoon of Thursday, 25 September 2025. At 09.00 on the next morning, the TriAX construction consortium (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans) were standing by to drive the beams ashore one by one (as calculated, they just fitted underneath the Schinkelbrug bridge), before being transported to our construction site in Riekerweg. Incidentally, the boat captain seemed (uniquely) unimpressed by the size of the beams. ‘I always transport something different, but using the same boat. Whether there’s water, sand or gravel in a container, it’s still a container’, he said after arriving at the Nieuwe Meer.

Widening of A10 Zuid

The flyover is part of the reconstruction of the De Nieuwe Meer junction that is needed in order to widen the A10 Zuid by adding two extra lanes for local traffic. In the future, the traffic will either leave the city from the S108/Amstelveenseweg or take the S109/Europaboulevard to reach the new parallel carriageway. Drivers will then be able to take the new flyover from the De Nieuwe Meer junction to reach the A4 Schiphol/Rotterdam.
