On 1 November, the new Brittenpassage will open and the existing station entrance will close for several years for refurbishment. In the meantime, you can continue to use the three existing underground bicycle parking facilities at Zuidplein (1,400 spaces), Strawinskylaan (3,750 spaces) and Mahlerplein (3,200 spaces). In fact, we recommend doing so, as there are usually spaces available, particularly at the latter two facilities. A further indoor bicycle parking facility with 2,000 spaces will open in the new passenger tunnel. Above ground, there will be even more changes.

Parking on the station plazas

From 1 November, the new station plazas on the northern and southern sides of the Brittenpassage will together provide more than 1,700 outdoor parking spaces for bicycles and cargo bikes. On the northern side, in Van Beinumstraat, there will be around 300 spaces. This will include the 200 cycle racks currently located alongside Albert Heijn. We will soon put up warning signs there, giving you plenty of time to remove your bicycle. On the southern side, in Schönberglaan, you can already see the more than 1,400 spaces. Both station plazas will also have space for scooters and non-standard bicycles, including cargo bikes.

Want to be sure of finding a bicycle parking space?
Around 1,700 outdoor spaces may sound like a lot, but it is certainly not enough for everyone visiting the station. The three underground cycle parking facilities at Zuidplein, Strawinskylaan and Mahlerplein will therefore continue to be useful after 1 November. Your bicycle will be secure there and out of the way of enforcement officers, who will start checking for incorrectly parked bicycles from that date. Read more about this later in the article.

More bicycle racks

The bicycle racks beneath the viaduct on the eastern side of Parnassusweg will also remain in use. The same applies to the racks on the other side of Amsterdam Zuid station, on Matthijs Vermeulenpad near the current station entrance. The approximately 200 bicycle racks next to the Hourglass building will be removed and relocated to the station plaza on the northern side of the Brittenpassage in Van Beinumstraat.

Help with bicycle parking from 1 October

To help you find the new and existing bicycle parking facilities and spaces, bicycle parking coaches will be on hand for a year from 1 October. On the busiest days (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday) they will be there from 07.00 to 15.30, probably focusing mainly on busy Eduard van Beinumstraat on the northern side of the station. They will not only show you where you can park your bicycle – in a parking facility, rack, designated area or bicycle stand – but will also, for example, speak to people cycling on the pavement. Together, we can keep the area safe and accessible for everyone.

Please note: enforcement from 1 November

After our bicycle parking coaches have spent a month helping everyone find their way, the municipality will step up enforcement from 1 November, with additional officers specifically responsible for incorrectly parked bicycles. This means that when the new station entrance – the Brittenpassage – opens, bicycles parked outside the designated bicycle parking areas may be removed by enforcement officers. The area in which these rules can be enforced has been extended; see the map below.
