Mahler 4 – UN Studio Tower

UNStudio Tower is part of the Mahler 4 complex; a cluster of nine buildings in Zuidas connected by an underground car park. At a height of 82.5 m, the tower has 21 floors and will be used by various companies. In order to give companies the opportunity to retain their individual identities, different office types have been designed to suit the various working styles of users.

A key principle in the design of the tower was natural light. In order to generate more than the statutory minimum daylight levels, the mezzanine areas have been strategically positioned to enable daylight to penetrate deep into the building. These mezzanine areas serve as spaces to meet and also help reduce energy consumption. The same applies to the exterior design: the horizontal aluminium strips have been designed to reduce direct sunlight – and therefore heat exposure – by 15 to 20%.

The horizontal pattern of the exterior also reflects the internal organisation; the façade is inset in the places where the internal mezzanine areas are, optically transforming its appearance. The plinth and entrance are transparent and have a human scale, set against the context of a large-scale office environment.
