The Rock

The Rock is a 22-storey office tower and is part of Mahler4, a subzone of Zuidas. The programme for this area comprises a mixture of offices, housing, retail and public space. The urban design concept developed by architects firm Cie. stipulated that the buildings should follow a classic façade structure, with a plinth, a central section and a crown. In The Rock, this results in a design featuring ‘rotated’ blocks, with lightweight and heavier materials overlapping and flowing into each other. Partly thanks to the use of materials in the façade, the three vertical sections of the building have their own character and appeal.

Because De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek became the building’s only tenant, the interior, also designed by the same architect Erick van Egeraat, could be perfectly tailored to meet the law firm’s specific needs. The aim was for a warm, comfortable and presentable office. This is partly expressed by the use of materials, including natural stone, wood and brass. Although the offices are fitted with state-of-the-art furniture, the finishing has been kept relatively simple. Thanks to this, and the flexible design of the building’s layout – with a grid size of 1.8 metres and fixed heights of free floors of 2.8 metres – the office accommodation can be relatively easily adapted to suit multiple tenants.
