Since 2024 we have been working on restarting the project Redesign De Boelelaan Midden (Central Section). De Boelelaan is an important traffic artery in Buitenveldert and Zuidas. The design and appearance of the central section of De Boelelaan dates in part from the 1960s, so it is due for an update. The priorities for this redesign are quality, road safety and overall design. Work is expected to begin in mid-2026 with the replacement of the road surface and foundation layer.

On 20 March 2020 the City Council approved a policy document (Nota van Uitgangspunten), based on an information meeting with the neighbourhood. The project subsequently came to a standstill due to delays in the progress of the Zuidas programme, an important interface for the proper implementation of De Boelelaan Midden.

De Boelelaan is an important traffic artery

Traffic Safety

De Boelelaan is an important traffic artery for motor vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. To allow enough space for all forms of traffic, we have included cycle paths, pedestrian routes and the parallel access road in our plans for this section of De Boelelaan. In particular, we aim to provide a safe and comfortable route for cyclists on the north side of the Parnassusweg and the Beethovenlaan. An important part of the design is improving the two existing pedestrian-bicycle crossings and increasing safety. Here we want to create a pedestrian crossing and a space (an ‘island’) between the carriageways.

Parking spaces and large green area

To make space for other purposes, we plan to remove many of the parking spaces along part of the parallel access road. Studies have shown that these parking spaces are often used by visitors to Zuidas. These visitors can also use the parking garages in Zuidas. Following the renovation project, there will still be enough parking spaces for residents who live in De Boelelaan along the parallel access road and in Groningenstraat. We also plan to combine the cycle path along the side of the buildings with the access road. The wide green strip on the north side between De Boelegracht and De Boelelaan will be redesigned. We want to do that in collaboration with local residents. Our initial proposal is for a green space suitable for walking and recreation.
