We managed to do a great deal of work at the De Nieuwe Meer junction. This included making space to widen the orbital ring road next to Joy Jaagpad tennis club and on the adjacent connecting road leading from the A10 Zuid to the A4 Schiphol/Rotterdam. To do this, the A10 Zuid had to be closed for the whole weekend in the direction of Schiphol/Rotterdam. In other places, the work is more advanced and we are working on the foundations that will support the additional lanes for local traffic.

Modifications to lanes and signposting

On the road connecting the A10 Zuid and the A4 in the direction of Schiphol/Rotterdam, we made the lanes narrower by modifying the road markings and overhead signs. This will provide us with more space at the side to make modifications to the adjacent railway viaduct.

Tree felling

In the bend that connects the A10 Zuid to the A10 West, next to Joy Jaagpad tennis club, we cut down the trees next to the motorway. This is where we plan to build a flyover that will direct traffic from Amsterdam – from the access road next to Amstelveenseweg – to the A4 in the direction of Schiphol/Rotterdam. After sawing down the trees, they were lifted from their position using a crane on the A10.

The trees were transported away from the A10

Soil-nailing next to the A10

Where the embankment is, on which the A10 will be located, additional lanes will later be added for local traffic. In order to excavate the embankment, we need to be sure that it remains stable. This can be done by reinforcing it with sheet piling, just as we did last weekend. In some places, the ground itself can be reinforced by means of anchors and poured concrete – in a process known as soil-nailing.

Delays

Although traffic flow was better than in the previous weekend, the closure of the A10 Zuid again caused delays on the A9 and the A10 Noord. These did not exceed 30 minutes on either of the routes. The city roads were also busier, especially around Amstelveenseweg and Zeilbrug/Zeilstraat in the direction of Hoofddorpplein. The delays there lasted up to 15 minutes, and occasionally 20 minutes when car drivers opted for a longer route through the city. Trams and buses also faced delays of 5 to 10 minutes.

Widening of A10 Zuid

The works are necessary in order to enable the widening of the A10 Zuid. We are creating additional carriageways, each with two extra lanes, intended for local traffic. From the De Nieuwe Meer junction, extra viaducts are needed over Amstelveenseweg and Piet Kranenbergpad, and extra bridges over the River Schinkel. We are currently making preparations for the construction of these bridges and viaducts.
