In the future, the existing station entrance, the Minervapassage, will be almost twice as high and three times as wide as it currently is. But the roof underneath the metro tracks was too low and too narrow, so we have replaced it, section by section, with a total of three new roof sections. On Monday, 28 July, we moved the last roof section into position underneath the southern metro track serving lines 50 (Gein) and 51 (Amsterdam Central Station). The preparations for this ran smoothly, enabling us to do the work a day ahead of schedule. Unfortunately, this meant that we had to cancel the planned public event.

Below, you can see four days of preparation and the shifting process all within a minute.

Shifting 1 million kilograms of concrete

For the new roof section, we installed new foundation piles into the ground and built a temporary support in the passageway. And then the roof section also had to be taken there, over a distance of 16 m. To do this, we used yellow girders to build a runner, to which we attached five hydraulic jacks. These finally pushed the roof section, measuring 100 m long and 4 m wide, into position centimetre by centimetre in the space of just a few hours.

The finishing touches

This successful operation means that the southern metro track is now again in use. On the supports, we will first pour concrete for what are known as ‘bearings’. These are steel plates poured in concrete with a rubber block that will lie between the roof and the supports. They will ensure that the roof section can withstand all of the forces of the metro track above it.

When these have hardened, we will very gradually lower the roof section onto the permanent supports – something we also did with the last roof section, see the video below. We will then rebuild the metro track and between 13.00 and 20.00 on Saturday, 2 August, we will lift the platform roof into place in six sections – anyone interested can watch it on our webcams.

Regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station

This is the very last roof section needed to get the metro tracks to the right height in order to make it possible for us to do major expansion work on the existing station passageway at Amsterdam Zuid station (Minervapassage). We started with the roof section under the two central metro tracks (line 52 or the North/South line) in 2023. This was followed a year later by the roof under the northern metro track (lines 50 and 51 in the direction of Isolatorweg). The regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station is necessary in order to accommodate growing passenger numbers.

Monday, 25 August: full metro service resumes
When we have finished our work, GVB will continue work replacing the metro tracks between Amsterdam Zuid station and Spaklerweg/Van der Madeweg. We will therefore have to wait until Monday, 25 August until the schedule for metros 50 (Gein) and 51 (Amsterdam Central Station) is completely back to normal.
