Last summer, we built five new support structures for the widening of the A10 Zuid at the viaduct over Amstelveenseweg. Construction consortium TriAX (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans) is now lifting 52 girders, each approximately 37 metres long, into place on both the north and south sides of the underpass. These girders form the foundation for the additional carriageways that will widen the A10 Zuid, with two extra lanes on each side of the viaduct. The lifting operations will be completed by Monday, 17 August, after which Amstelveenseweg beneath the A10 Zuid will fully reopen to traffic.
GVB can get to work
From Monday, 6 July, we spent three nights lifting the girders above the tram stop into position on the western side. We then filled the spaces between the girders with reinforcement steel and concrete, creating a watertight deck. This allowed GVB to begin installing various systems straight away, enabling the tram tracks underneath to be brought back into service as quickly as possible. According to the current schedule, tram 24 will resume service on Saturday, 25 July.
Challenges
Just as last year, the road closure has taken some getting used to for road users. The work itself also presents a number of challenges. For example, last Monday, we were unable to position the first girder on the north side of the viaduct onto its support structures in time. We therefore adjusted the schedule and deployed additional personnel and equipment for a rapid catch-up operation two nights later, on Wednesday night. As a result, the project is now fully back on schedule.
Schedule
Now that the girders have been installed on the western side, both north and south of the viaduct, work will move to the eastern side over the coming week. During the nights of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, we will repeat the lifting operation carried out on the western side by installing the girders. After that, there will no longer be any need to work beneath the viaduct. From that moment until Monday, 17 August, work will continue on topof the viaduct instead, installing the reinforcement steel and pouring the concrete.
This does not mean the new section of the A10 Zuid above Amstelveenseweg will be complete. The girders will later be topped with a foundation layer, a new asphalt surface, road markings, traffic management systems and noise barriers.
