With temperatures that felt like -15° C, the workers from the Nieuw-Zuid construction consortium (Mobilis, Boskalis and Van Gelder) certainly had their work cut out last weekend. But they soldiered on, successfully lifting new platform roofs for the most southerly metro platform above the new Brittenpassage into position. Despite the cold conditions (and all of the ice), the work was completed on schedule.

Finishing touches at a later date

By the morning of Sunday, 11 January, the sections of the metro platform roof were in place above the additional passenger tunnel at Amsterdam Zuid station. The finishing touches, such as the roof covering, will be added to the roofs at a later date. The snow this last weekend prevented work on top of the roofs for safety reasons. In March 2026, we will also be lifting platform roofs for the other new (most northerly) metro platform into their position. The railway platforms were partially fitted with new roofs in the autumn of 2025.

Opening of Brittenpassage

The new metro platforms are expected to be more or less completed around the summer of 2026, but they will not be put into use at that stage. That time will come when the Brittenpassage actually opens, in 2027 at the latest. That is when we are closing the existing passenger tunnel (the Minervapassage) in order to thoroughly renovate it and the existing (temporary) metro platforms will no longer be accessible.
