Gershwin
Gershwin is the first fully completed residential neighbourhood in Zuidas. It is mainly made up of upmarket rented and owner-occupied housing, but Gershwin also saw the completion of Zuidas’s first social housing complex: Ella, boasting 58 apartments.
Heart of Zuidas
The Gershwin neighbourhood, which takes its name from composer George Gershwin, is located in the heart of Zuidas. The first buildings appeared in 2009: The Symphony towers, comprising a residential and an office building. The social housing project known as Ella was completed in 2017.
The most important street is George Gershwinlaan. It runs from Parnassusweg to Beethovenstraat, with Gershwinplein in the middle. This is the neighbourhood’s central square. There are various hospitality outlets and the Thursday market. Via the Lex van Deldenbrug bridge, there is a link to Buitenveldert for pedestrians and cyclists.
The newest addition to Gershwin is the Kunstbrug art bridge, a gift from the Zuidschans development consortium (developers BPD | Bouwfonds and AM). The pedestrian bridge between De Boelelaan and Rosy Wertheimstraat opened in 2024.
Public space
The public space in the side streets of George Gershwinlaan was landscaped in consultation with residents, partly by means of a special online dialogue and a live conversation. The layout of each street has been given its own special emphasis: sport, places to meet, green areas, play areas.
