More and more people are living, working and spending time in Zuidas. At the same time, Amsterdam Zuid station is developing into a major national and international public transport hub, with up to 250,000 passengers a day expected by 2030. As the number of residents, visitors, passengers and office workers grows, Zuidas needs to remain a safe, pleasant and easily accessible place for everyone. To achieve this, we plan to redesign some of the main traffic routes in Zuidas, reducing the amount of space allocated to cars.

Stationscarré Zuid

The Zuidflank Sustainable Accessibility Mobility Plan (2023) identifies a one-way traffic system as one possible solution. Under this proposal, Strawinskylaan, Parnassusweg, Mahlerlaan and Beethovenstraat would together form Stationscarré Zuid. The proposal is to introduce one-way traffic for cars on the two north-south routes between Mahlerlaan and Strawinskylaan: Parnassusweg for traffic heading out of the city and Beethovenstraat for traffic heading into the city. Changing the direction of traffic is necessary to create space for additional bus and tram stops, as well as tracks where trams can turn around and wait. For the east-west routes, Mahlerlaan and Strawinskylaan, the direction of traffic is less critical. We are therefore exploring both one-way and two-way options together with the local community.

New public spaces

We want to use the space freed up by reducing road space to create new public areas for walking, cycling and spending time outdoors, as well as new bus and tram stops. At the same time, we will take account of access to homes, businesses and local facilities, and the impact on surrounding streets.

Stationscarré Zuid: it has not yet been decided whether Strawinskylaan and Mahlerlaan will have one-way or two-way traffic.

We want to keep local people informed and involved in these major changes. This will include meetings for residents and updates on this website. We are also setting up a community advisory group that will meet several times a year. We want the group to reflect the wide range of people who use the area: women and men, younger and older people, people with and without children, and people with different mobility needs.

Parnassusweg

Introducing one-way traffic would create space for new arrival stops for regional buses. This will only be possible if the two eastern lanes, currently used by traffic heading into the city, are removed. An added benefit is that passengers getting off these buses would no longer need to cross the road to reach the station, making the traffic situation beneath the viaduct safer.

Beethovenstraat

We want to install a tram turning track and a separate waiting track beneath the railway viaducts on Beethovenstraat, together with a waiting area for GVB staff. To make room for these facilities, the western lanes, currently used by traffic heading out of the city, would need to be removed.

Strawinskylaan

The proposal is to retain the arrival stops for city buses on Strawinskylaan. We are also exploring different traffic arrangements for this street.

Expanding public transport facilities
At the so-called OV-tafel (public transportation roundtable), the City of Amsterdam, Vervoerregio Amsterdam, GVB and Zuidasdok have jointly examined ways to expand and improve bus and tram facilities around Amsterdam Zuid station. The proposals include new stops and additional space for trams to turn around and wait. Stationscarré Zuid is intended to create the space needed for these improvements.

Mahlerlaan

Quality of life, greenery, pleasant public spaces and road safety are the main priorities for the redesign of Mahlerlaan. The street currently carries a considerable amount of through traffic using it as a shortcut between Beethovenstraat and Parnassusweg, in addition to vehicles heading to Mahlerlaan itself, nearby buildings and the station. Pedestrian crossings also need to be made safer, particularly as passenger movements will change following the opening of the new station entrance on 1 November. Work to improve these crossings has already begun and is expected to be completed around the time the new station entrance opens.

What happens next?

The preliminary concept design we are working on this year does not yet determine whether Strawinskylaan and Mahlerlaan will have one-way or two-way traffic. Under the current schedule, decisions on the street layout plan, the guiding principles, the public participation plan and traffic circulation are expected in early 2028. Meanwhile, we will continue developing the design for each individual street.

Mahlerlaan trial

Before summer 2028, we will prepare a trial of one-way traffic on Mahlerlaan. We will also demonstrate how the public space could look with more greenery and more places for people to spend time and meet. After the trial, we will evaluate the results, taking account of feedback and concerns from the local community. We will then decide on the final traffic arrangements. Two-way traffic will remain an option. Between 2029 and 2032, we will develop the final design for the entire station area. We expect the last construction work to be completed around 2040.
