Friday 1 to Sunday 3 November: A10 South closed and no trains at Zuid and RAI stations

If you are going to travel by road or public transport on the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday of November, you should allow considerable extra travel time and bear in mind about there will be closures and diversions.

Limited train traffic is possible from, to and via Amsterdam Zuid station and RAI on Sunday 3 November. The NS recommends that passengers consult the NS travel planner before they leave and allow extra time for their journey.

Extremely busy

Traffic in the Amsterdam region is expected to be extremely busy on Friday 1 November in particular. The A10 South will then be closed off in the direction of Utrecht. Normally, the volume of traffic there during the Friday morning rush-hour is 10,000 cars per hour. The A5 and A9 diversion routes do not have sufficient capacity to cope with this amount of traffic. People who commute by car are therefore urgently advised to work from home or elsewhere and to leave the alternative routes as free as possible for those for whom car travel is absolutely essential. The three-day closure of the south side of the A10 South and the railway is necessary because the tracks and roadway have to be removed (and later put back) in order to allow the installation of the gigantic roof section of the station passageway.

A4 and A10 South

As from 22.00 on Thursday evening 31 October the A10 South will be closed on the south side until 05:00 on Monday morning 4 November. Coming from the A10 West, the A10 South will be closed off from De Nieuwe Meer junction in the direction of the A2 and A10 East (Amstel junction). Coming from the A4/Schiphol the motorways (A4 and A10 South) will be closed off from the Badhoevedorp junction onwards. Traffic will be diverted via the A5 and A9. The S109 slip road in the direction of Amstel junction will remain in use, as will the A10 South and the A4 in the direction of Schiphol.

Limited train traffic is possible from, to and via Amsterdam Zuid station and RAI on Sunday 3 November. The NS recommends that passengers consult the NS travel planner before they leave and allow extra time for their journey.

Station passageway

The weekend work is necessary in order to enlarge Amsterdam Zuid station as part of the Zuidasdok project. Although this project is delayed, the commissioning parties (national government, the municipality of Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Regional Transport Authority [Vervoerregio Amsterdam] and the provincial government of Noord-Holland) are continuing with the renovation of Amsterdam Zuid station. The installation of the concrete deck of the extra station passageway, that was originally planned to take place during the three-day Whitsun weekend in June this year, is a crucial step in the process of increasing capacity at the busy Amsterdam Zuid station.
