Consultation on redeveloping Kapel and Convict buildings

We are considering launching a public selection procedure in 2023 to find a party to redevelop the Kapel & Convict buildings. We have not yet made a final decision on whether or not to proceed with this selection procedure, however. Prior to any selection procedure, we would like to give interested parties the opportunity to submit their plans and suggestions regarding these two municipal monuments, and to indicate points for attention in the selection procedure. We have already identified the most important requirements for this. In order to provide a clearer picture of the buildings, we are offering interested parties the opportunity to visit the buildings on 29 September between 9.30 and 12.00.

From religious buildings to a cultural and social function

Kapel & Convict form part of what was once the Roman Catholic St Nicholas complex. The buildings date from the 1950s, but they stopped being used for religious purposes at the end of the 20th century. Since then, the buildings have had various functions. They have accommodated spaces for businesses, the As restaurant, the Design Museum and the Sandberg Institute. There were plans for the Amsterdam Conservatory to renovate the buildings this year, but the Conservatory had to abandon these plans due to rising construction costs.

A lively location with a public role

Kapel & Convict were designated municipal monuments in 2014 and are now under temporary management. The cultural/societal function of the two buildings will be preserved in the future. The ambition is for a public interpretation that makes the buildings as accessible as possible for a broad target group. A cultural and/or social function supplemented with hospitality would be an obvious choice. This could become a lively, high-profile location offering innovative interpretation and programming.
