ADORE enables unique collaboration between medical disciplines

ADORE is part of Amsterdam UMC. Work began on the foundation of the building in March 2022. Six months later, on 28 September, there was a celebration to mark the official start of construction. This high-tech new building will be six storeys high and include both offices, laboratory facilities and a cleanroom – a highly conditioned environment with ultra-high quality requirements, which will be used for research into cancer and neurological disorders. This is the first time that oncological and neurological research are being combined in this way, anywhere in the world. So this building is all about collaboration and connection.

Cross-pollination

In the research centre, scientists and researchers in oncology and neurology will soon be teaming up with SMEs, the pharmaceutical sector and knowledge institutions such as VU Amsterdam and University of Amsterdam. They will take advantage of the similarities between their disciplines in order to accelerate research progress and make breakthroughs. ADORE is designed to encourage cross-pollination between the two disciplines by providing various meeting places throughout the building. And ADORE will provide funding, too, meaning that researchers do not have to work on lengthy grant applications and can spend more time focusing on their research.

Connection with the Imaging Centre

ADORE will be connected to the Imaging Centre via an atrium on the ground floor. The heart of ADORE will be on the second floor, where there will be a private courtyard with a large patio. The courtyard will also allow daylight into the offices in the middle of the building and provide various meeting places. The upper floors will be accessed via an open staircase. The second floor will include laboratory facilities and a conference room that can be adjusted in size.

Flexible and sustainable living

The spaces inside ADORE can easily be adapted without having to change the ceilings, floors, lighting, ventilation or other (lab) facilities. The walls inside the building can be moved relatively easily and the facilities are available everywhere. ADORE is the first Amsterdam UMC building to have thermal energy storage – an environmentally friendly method of storing heat energy under the ground. The roof also acts as a buffer to retain rainwater following downpours, releasing it gradually into the drains, and the roof is fitted with solar panels.

The Innovation District

In partnership with VU Amsterdam and Amsterdam UMC, over the years to come we will be transforming the Innovation District into an exciting mixed neighbourhood where a wide range of functions come together. This neighbourhood is located just south of the A10 motorway, between Parnassusweg/Buitenveldertselaan, A.J. Ernststraat and Amstelveenseweg). Around 2,700 homes will be built here in total, in addition to space for education, the knowledge industry, care, culture, retail and hospitality. ADORE is a wonderful addition to the Innovation District as it will provide a place where people can come together, meet, inspire one another and share knowledge.
