This is according to a second public survey that we commissioned at the end of 2024. The first survey was conducted at the end of 2023. Although the majority of you remain positive, the proportion of people who take a (very) negative view about all of the developments has grown: from 11% to 19%. This therefore means that the number of people with no view on this matter has declined.
Awareness has increased
You are better informed about what is happening on the south side of Amsterdam. Almost half of you now know that we are regenerating Amsterdam Zuid station (compared to 44% in 2023). Awareness of the widening and partial tunnelling of the A10 Zuid has also increased. Awareness of the development of the Zuidas district has remained constant at 40% and is still on the low side. People living locally are well aware (80%) that we are transforming Zuidas into a district where there will also be (social rented) housing and amenities. The proportion of you who say you have ‘no interest’ in the development of the Zuidas district has increased to more than 50%.
More disruption
The fact that your awareness has increased is doubtless because our work has become more visible: we caused more disruption in 2024 than we did in 2023. On the city roads, almost 60% experienced disruption (compared to 50% in 2023) and on the A10 Zuid, that figure was 57% (compared to 42% in 2023). This is hardly surprising: it was in 2024 that the works on the A10 Zuid really started in earnest. The disruption experienced by those of you who are railway and metro passengers has remained relatively constant, probably because you already became accustomed to works on and around Amsterdam Zuid station in 2023. Local residents faced significantly more disruption from noise and vibration.
Mainly positive
Despite the increased disruption, you continue to take a mainly positive view and understand the need for all of the works. Three-quarters of you believe that the development of Zuidas into a mixed residential district is important. As many as 85% of you also feel the same about the regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station. And almost 80% take this view about the widening and partial tunnelling of the A10 Zuid.
Improvements
In response to the results of the public survey at the end of 2023, we implemented four improvements in our communications in 2024: attempting to reach out to other Amsterdam citizens alongside local residents; specifically highlighting the fact that we are developing a mixed residential district; placing greater emphasis on inviting you to visit our information centre; and raising greater awareness of the option for using our contact form to submit a complaint or make a report. The public survey in 2024 shows that we were partially successful in these three objectives. Interest in the development of the Zuidas district grew most among Amsterdam citizens as a whole, they expect the construction of the tunnel to make the district more attractive and they are better informed about the existence of this website. Awareness of our information centre has also increased. However, awareness of the option for submitting complaints and making reports still needs improvement. Only one quarter of you know how to do that.
Temporary outdoor space
Finally, we introduced a new question in our 2024 survey. We want to know what view you take about the temporary landscaping of outdoor space. This is a matter we are considering because the situation in and around Zuidas is changing during the works. We asked what you consider to be important and what ideas you have for the landscaping of the temporary outdoor spaces. Most of your replies to this open question were green suggestions: space for trees, plants and animals, but also for opportunities for play and games in the green areas. Some of you would prefer to see more creative, artistic use of these temporary spaces. And, finally, a proportion of you consider temporary landscaping to be a waste of money.
How are we responding to the survey?
As in 2023, we are using the 2024 public survey to improve the service we offer to you. Of course, we will carefully consider what to do with your ideas and comments about the temporary landscaping of outdoor spaces. In 2025, we are also repeating our commitment to ensure that all Amsterdam citizens are properly informed about all developments, since they are also affected by them. We will also endeavour to improve our messaging about working on a mixed city district, in which we are also building 40% social rented homes. We will continue to promote the Zuidas-Zuidasdok Information Centre, where we can speak to you in person. We are also attempting to raise more awareness about our contact form, which you can use for your questions, complaints and reports.
