Update, Tuesday 22 July Under the article, we have added an infographic featuring facts & figures about the 16-day works (in Dutch).

The A10 Zuid, next to Amsterdam Zuid station, is now back as it should be. But things were very different just a few days ago. Starting on 26 June, in the direction of the A2 Utrecht and A1 Hengelo, the Nieuw-Zuid construction consortium (Mobilis, Boskalis and Van Gelder) completely dug up the dike embankment on which this motorway was built. We did this to prepare for the renovation of the station entrance – the Minervapassage. We are making it three times as wide: from 12 to 40 m.

Temporary ‘tunnels’

After the road had been dug up, we built three extra temporary ‘tunnels’ on both sides of the Minervapassage (on the Mahlerplein side). We will use the extra tunnels when the renovation work starts on the actually Minervapassage.

Lengthening railway platform

In the meantime, we were also working on the lengthening of the railway platform, reaching across Parnassusweg. This is necessary, because the station will be shifted slightly to the west during the renovation work on the Minervapassage. This is where the new Brittenpassage is set to open in 2027 at the latest. Since the Minervapassage will then be closing, passengers will board and exit the train in a different place. For this reason, we will also have to temporarily move the railway platform slightly.

Sheet-pile walls

The TriAX construction consortium (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans) took advantage of the work at Amsterdam Zuid station to continue working on the widening of the A10 Zuid. This included creating a sheet-pile wall between Jachthavenweg and the A10 Zuid, right next to the Infinity building, close to the future bus exit. Local residents experienced several days of noise. A sheet-pile wall also appeared next to the Schinkelbrug bridge.

‘Pile-driving mound’

The work on the intersection connecting the A10 West to the A10 Zuid was spectacular. There will be a new flyover here connecting the A10 Zuid to the A4 in the direction of The Hague/Schiphol. This will be supported by pillars, consisting of concrete foundations with columns. Two of these pillars will be on either side of this intersection. These could only be built by closing the intersection and building a ‘pile-driving mound’ on top of the road: a huge pile of sand from which we did the work.
