This summer, we are building as many as five new (central) supports for the widening of the viaduct above Amstelveenseweg. The widening is needed for the new lanes on the A10 Zuid. The work is progressing well: the TriAX construction consortium (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans) has now completed work building the foundations for these new supports. However, the road closure is presenting some challenges, both for the traffic and for the traffic controllers. The first week in particular was somewhat disorganised, because cyclists and public transport were also being diverted. In the meantime, everyone seems to be successfully navigating the situation, although there is still another week to go until Amstelveenseweg reopens on 20 August.

Piles inserted, footings almost ready

In order to build the foundations, we removed sections of the lanes on Amstelveenseweg around the central reservation. After that, we inserted 38 piles into the ground (on both the north and south side of the viaduct). We poured concrete on the top of these piles, creating a large footing (underground foundation structure). We did this last week for the footing on the north side and are working on the south side this week. When the footings have hardened, we will begin construction work on the new columns. These are made of prefab concrete elements and will have a beam on top of them.

Demolition of south side of viaduct

This was not all the work we did. We demolished part of the existing viaduct on the south side to make room for the future widening. We then added a new edge to the existing viaduct. On the east and west side of Amstelveenseweg, we also added a retaining wall structure (next to the embankment). Later this year – after the summer closure is over – we will then be able to dig here and build abutments. These are the foundation structures on either side of a bridge or viaduct. In the years ahead, we will be completing further work on the viaduct after which we will also be regenerating the junction underneath the viaduct.

Bringing Amstelveenseweg back to normal

After we have built the new supports, we will bring everything back to normal. This will include adding extra soil, resurfacing and applying new road markings. Amstelveenseweg will reopen again at 05.00 on 20 August.

Widening of A10 Zuid

The A10 Zuid, between the Amstel and De Nieuwe Meer junctions, is being increased from four to six lanes in both directions: four of them for through-traffic and two for local traffic. This will make it safer and improve traffic flow. For this purpose, we are building or renovating 14 viaducts in and around the De Nieuwe Meer junction, including the viaduct next to Amstelveenseweg.
