The asphalt is fresh, the road markings are new – Amstelveenseweg is looking in good shape again. Over the last five weeks or so, it has been a very different story. On the evening of Friday, 11 July, we closed the road under the A10 Zuid viaduct. This was in order to build supports on both sides of the viaduct for the two additional viaducts across Amstelveenseweg. These are needed because of the widening of the A10 Zuid. The motorway will soon have two additional lanes for local traffic in both directions of travel. These lanes will be located on the two new viaducts.

Building supports

The construction work on the viaducts – two on the north side and three on the south side – was completed without problems. The work done by the TriAX construction consortium (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans) involved demolishing part of the existing viaduct on the south side, installing foundation piles on the central reservation of Amstelveenseweg, putting in place two huge underground footings (concrete foundation structures), positioning prefabricated supports and finally, connecting these supports by means of two huge girders – also referred to as bearer beams. On both sides of Amstelveenseweg, we also made a start building the enormous abutments that will support the ends of the two viaducts. In early August, we reported on progress made so far.

Broken boom

The difficult part of the work came just at the end. For the three supports on the south side, a huge bearer beam had to be transported from the TriAX work site to Amstelveenseweg. The boom of the crane that was supposed to lift the colossus onto a trailer gave way under the strain. A second crane had to be brought in at speed in order to finish the job with only a little delay. In Amstelveenseweg itself, everything ran smoothly. The bearer beam was lifted from the trailer and placed on the three supports with the utmost precision. Watch how it happened.

Summer closures in 2026 and 2027

This was the first summer of intensive work in Amstelveenseweg. During a summer closure in 2026, we will be building a roof on the north and south side of the viaduct that will ultimately rest on the supports and abutments. The roof will consist of concrete girders each measuring around 37 m in length. In 2027, we will be working on the junction underneath the viaduct. We will then be separating the traffic between Amstelveen and Amsterdam from the traffic heading to the A10 Zuid. We will also be connecting the new S108 access road that will run from the Tripolis-Park offices in the direction of the A4 Schiphol/The Hague. The new junction layout will be completed in 2028.
