The TriAX construction consortium (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans) is working for Zuidasdok on a safer and wider A10 Zuid. There will be two additional lanes in each direction. Through-traffic and local traffic will also be separated from each other. In order to make this possible, we are building a new flyover from the A10 Zuid in the direction of the A4 Schiphol/Rotterdam. There will also be extra bridges at the Schinkelbrug for road users. In the years ahead, all of this will involve a lot of works.
What questions did the attendees ask?
On 12 November, we updated attendees on the details of and reasons for these works and there was of course an opportunity to put questions. The questions that were asked most often are included below.
- Where will the cycle path across the Schinkel be?
The new cycle path will be on the new bridge on the south side of the existing Schinkelbrug, that we are currently building. The start of the cycle path will be on the east side of the Schinkel, in Jachthavenweg next to the Infinity building (also known as ‘De Schoen’/’the Shoe’). From there, the cycle path will rise gradually, parallel to the A10 Zuid orbital ring road, before continuing in a straight line across the Schinkel. The path will then descend again, reaching the existing car park next to Riekerweg. The new cycle link will open in 2031.
- Why will the old cycle route not be reinstated?
The old cycle route across Jachthavenweg cannot be reinstated because this space is needed for the widening of the A10 Zuid and the new bridge. Instead, there will be a cycle bridge across the Schinkel and the space that remains next to the A10 (Jachthavenweg) will become a (‘seashell’) footpath. Cyclists will be diverted via the new cycle path across the Schinkel or via Het Piet Kranenbergpad and IJsbaanpad.
- Why are the noise barriers lower on the south side of the A10 Zuid? The barrier runs from 8 to 1 m.
On the south side of the A10 Zuid between the Schinkel and Infinity, there are fewer noise-sensitive sites. This is why no noise barriers are needed to comply with the legal noise limits.
- Why will the noise barriers on the moving part of the Schinkelbrug be 2 m high?
There will be extra noise barriers on both sides of the Schinkelbrug. On the east side (Zuidas side), the barriers will be 4 m high and 5 m high on the west side (Schiphol side). On the moving part of the bridge, the barrier will remain 2 m in height. It cannot be any higher, because this part of the bridge cannot support additional weight and there is too little space when the bridge opens.
- What will the junction look like?
The A10 Zuid, between the Amstel and De Nieuwe Meer junctions, is being increased from four to six lanes in both directions: four of them for through-traffic and two for local traffic heading to Amsterdam Zuid. We explain the new routes in our animation.
- What is currently happening on the site next to the Schinkel?
That is the location where the TriAX construction consortium is doing the preliminary building work. It is where we are building large concrete sections for new viaducts and bridges next to the A10 Zuid. There is insufficient space to build these components at their permanent site.
- Why is the Schinkelbrug no longer opening?
The Schinkelbrug (A10) at Amsterdam Zuid is no longer in operation because of a technical fault in the operating mechanism. Rijkswaterstaat (Public Works Department) is investigating what will be needed to enable the bridge to operate safely again.
- Will the cycle path across the southern lock gate be opening again?
The cycle path across the southern lock gate has been closed because we are building a new bridge above it. However, the northern lock crossing remains in use. The cycle path across the southern lock gate will be closed until 2027.
