Cycle paths around Schinkelbrug: now and in the future

Riekerweg, Jaagpad, IJsbaanpad, Piet Kranenbergpad and Jachthavenweg – these are the most frequently-used cycle routes around the Schinkelbrug, at the heart of all the works around the De Nieuwe Meer junction. But because of the use of construction routes and sites and the start of construction work later this year, cyclists are set to face numerous diversions and closures in the years ahead. These will often be temporary, but some will be permanent, such as the closure of Jachthavenweg. At the same time, we will be building a brand-new, fast cycle connection across the Schinkel, with a slightly lower footpath next to it (a ‘seashell path’, see map below).

The new cycle path will be on the new bridge that will be built on the south side of the existing Schinkelbrug. The start of the cycle path will be on the side of the Schinkel, next to the Infinity building (also known as ‘De Schoen’ / ‘the Shoe’). From there, the cycle path will rise slightly, parallel to the A10 Zuid orbital ring road, before continuing in a straight line across the Schinkel. The path will then descend again, reaching the existing car park next to Riekerweg. There will be a seashell path for pedestrians on the recently closed Jachthavenweg. The new cycle connection and seashell path are expected to open in 2031.

The structural renewal of the A10 Zuid is part of Zuidasdok and begins with the large-scale reconstruction of the De Nieuwe Meer junction. The contract for this project was awarded in 2022 to the TriAX construction consortium (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans). We are building a new flyover and bridges across the Schinkel and widening the A10 Zuid from four to six lanes in each direction. Local traffic and through-traffic will be separated from each other. We are creating the space needed to improve traffic flow on the A10 Zuid and make it safer. To enable this to happen, major changes are required on the De Nieuwe Meer junction and later also on the Amstel junction.
