As unsuspecting public transport passengers walked through the passageway, we shifted a million kilogrammes of steel and concrete above their heads – 15.7 m northwards to right next to the A10 Zuid. The Nieuw-Zuid construction consortium (Mobilis, Boskalis and Van Gelder) completed the job in the space of a few hours, just as they had a week earlier on the other side of the station, above the new Brittenpassage. But this time, there was a bonus: a day after the move, we lowered the huge piece of concrete a further 2 m. Would you like to watch it?

On our work site between the metro tracks, there was very little space to build a section of roof measuring 100 m long and 4 m wide. So we devised an ingenious plan: we built the roof section on top of the roof that we had moved into position back in 2023. After that, partly to make the move possible, we demolished the northern metro track used by lines 50 and 51 in the direction of Isolatorweg. We will later rebuild the metro track on top of the new roof next to the A10.

After the yellow ‘slides’ and jacks had been fitted, the process of moving could start, at around 11.00 on 5 August. We used four hydraulic jacks to move the deck to its final destination on the temporary supports next of the A10. That completed the first stage of the operation.

Because we were moving the deck sideways from another section, it was towering around 2 m above the rest of the roof. A day later, on 6 August, we resolved this issue by gradually dismantling the temporary supports. We then lowered the roof to a position 4.928 m above sea level. It was the culmination of this successful, two-day operation.

Regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station

We are replacing the roof of the Minervapassage because, in the future, it will be twice as high as it is now. In 2023, we moved the first section of the new roof into position. In 2025, we will move the third and final roof section into position underneath the metro tracks next to the Minervapassage. The train tracks are already at the right height. The regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station is necessary in order to cope with growing passenger numbers.
