We are renovating the two railway platforms at Amsterdam Zuid station. We are also making preparations for a third railway platform, with two additional railway tracks. This expansion will make it possible for international trains to use Amsterdam Zuid station, relieving the pressure from Amsterdam Central Station.
The new railway platforms will have spacious stairways leading from the Minervapassage and the Brittenpassage. The existing entrance on Parnassusweg will no longer be necessary when the Brittenpassage is complete and will disappear. From the passageways, it will be possible to access the platforms on both sides, with staircases, escalators and lifts. We are also extending the length of the railway platforms. This will help to spread the passengers more evenly, both in the passageways, on the stairways and on the platforms themselves. This is very much needed, because the platforms are currently overcrowded at rush hour.
Light
A key aspect of the design is light. The platform roofs will allow light to penetrate and the platform floors will also allow light in next to the stairways. These stairways will also feature glass housing, enabling light in from the platform floor to the platform roof.
Sustainability
We are making the station as sustainable as possible. Solar panels on the platform roofs generate energy and planting on the roofs helps to retain water for longer. We are using sustainable materials.
Third railway platform
On the south side of the existing railway platform, there are plans for a third railway platform, with two additional tracks. This platform will be needed in order to enable international trains to access Amsterdam Zuid station. The relocation of international railway traffic from Amsterdam Central Station to Amsterdam Zuid station is part of a larger plan by ProRail aimed at coping with the increasingly busy railways in the years ahead. The current southern railway platform – which will be the centre platform in the future – will then be modified to enable the arrival and departure of high-speed trains. On the south side, there will be a lounge for high-speed trains travelling to non-Schengen countries. This lounge is intended for railway passengers departing to the United Kingdom (London) and the passenger and baggage checks will take place there. Trains to places like Brussels and Paris will also depart from the central platform, but passengers will use the normal stairways (without Customs).
The construction of a third railway platform and everything this involves is currently not part of the Zuidasdok project. However, by building the foundations for the third railway platform and diverting the motorway into a tunnel near the station, Zuidasdok will make the third platform possible. Construction work on the third railway platform is not expected to start before 2030.
