Construction work on the A10 tunnel is expected to start in 2027. However, before that, we need to create space to build the tunnel and this work will become increasingly noticeable in the period ahead. It includes slightly moving the tram stop for line 25 in Parnassusweg, and in 2026 we will even be relocating part of the A10. We also need to create space underground, including in the streets next to Amsterdam Zuid station where the A10 will be. This will include removing lots of cables, pipelines and ducting from Matthijs Vermeulenpad starting on 4 August. We will also do this around the corner, on the west side of Beethovenstraat up to the entrance to the ABN AMRO car park. There will be occasional diversions for cyclists and pedestrians, but no disruption at all to car traffic. The work will be completed by 1 November.

Watch out for your bike: free bicycle parking in the local area
On Friday, 1 August, we will be removing the bikes and scooters in the low-level bicycle racks in Matthijs Vermeulenpad, in other words from Beethovenstraat all the way to the double racks next to the Qbic Hotel. We will do the same on the west side of Beethovenstraat, between Matthijs Vermeulenpad and the entrance to the ABN AMRO car park. Starting on Thursday, 17 July, ‘bike coaches’ will be standing by to direct everyone to the free local bicycle parking facilities – see the map underneath the article for details. There will also be yellow signs in the whole street to inform cyclists of the upcoming removal process. Any bikes removed can be collected from the bike depot.

Station zone always accessible

Because we are doing the work in different phases, it will always be possible to access the station zone. In Matthijs Vermeulenpad, we will always be working on one side only, leaving the other half free to use. In Beethovenstraat, cyclists and pedestrians will be diverted via the other side of Beethovenstraat. From 18 August until 13 September, Spoorslag, the access-only street between the station entrance in Mahlerplein and Beethovenstraat, will be completely closed. Traffic will then be diverted from Mahlerplein via Mahlerlaan to Beethovenstraat, and vice-versa.

What do we plan to do?

In Matthijs Vermeulenpad, we are removing various medium-voltage cables, telecom ducting and an electricity cable belonging to the Public Works department (Rijkswaterstaat). Waternet will then seize the opportunity to move a drinking water pipeline that is currently creating an obstacle in order to be able to remove some tiebacks next to the WTC. On the west side of Beethovenstraat, we will be removing a Rijkswaterstaat optical fibre tube, several medium- and low-voltage cables belonging to both the GVB and Liander (they will do the work themselves) and some disused telecom cables.
