In the central area of Zuidas, the A10 Zuid (South) motorway will disappear underground for more than a kilometre. The widened section of motorway is set to be diverted through a tunnel between the Buitenveldert cemetery and Beatrixpark. This will create 100,000 sq. m. of additional space above ground.

Schedule

The design and realization of the tunnel has been awarded to Van Hattum en Blankevoort. A two-year design phase will start in September 2024. During this period, the contractor will in turn draw up a draft design, a provisional design and a definitive design. This will happen within a construction team made up of Zuidasdok staff and the contractor. Construction work on the tunnel is expected to start in 2027. According to the current schedule, the southern tunnel will be completed in 2034 and the northern tunnel in 2035.

Works already under way

In various places in Zuidas, we are already clearing the area underground to remove obstacles such as cables, pipelines and tieback anchors. In June 2023, some disused cables and pipelines were removed in Parnassusweg. Alongside the WTC, where the northern tunnel will be, there are around 200 unused tieback anchors creating an obstacle for the construction of the tunnel. We are also gradually removing these before starting the tunnel.

Creating valuable space

The construction of the Zuidas Tunnel is a long-term project. During the process of construction, there will be long periods of serious disruption of all kinds. Ultimately, the aim is for the project to add quality. The space created above the tunnel will provide more room for the city and its residents, reducing noise pollution in the local area and making it greener. There will also be more room for a new Amsterdam Zuid station which will serve international connections, taking the pressure off Schiphol and Amsterdam Central Station. Underneath it, there will be a wider A10 that will reduce traffic in the city centre and improve traffic flow in the northern Randstad. By building the Zuidas Tunnel we will be providing valuable additional space.
