Preparatory work on A10 tunnel next to WTC

In August and September 2023, we will be working in the ground underneath Matthijs Vermeulenpad, between the station and Beethovenstraat. These works are in preparation for the future construction of the tunnel, into which we will divert the A10 underground. For that purpose, we will be hoisting 13 metre-long sheet piles and driving them into the ground. We want to do the work safely. We will therefore be closing Matthijs Vermeulenpad to traffic for a two-month period.

Tunnel construction

According to the current schedule, Zuidasdok will begin construction of a motorway tunnel in 2027, into which we will divert the widened A10. Before then, we are clearing the area underground to remove obstacles such as cables, pipelines and tieback anchors in as many places as possible. Alongside the WTC, there are currently around 200 tieback anchors creating an obstacle for the construction of the tunnel. These lateral foundation piles were used during the construction of the WTC and are no longer needed. In order to prevent damage to the building during their removal, we are carrying out a test to see how they can be removed most effectively and quickly. In early 2024, we will remove the remaining tiebacks underneath Matthijs Vermeulenpad. While digging test trenches some months ago, we also identified several unused cables and pipelines. These will also be removed in order to leave plenty of space for construction of the tunnel.

Diversion for pedestrians and cyclists

Pedestrians and cyclists who generally travel via Matthijs Vermeulenpad on their way to the station or pedestrians who take Matthijs Vermeulenpad to get to their destination now have two options: either the southern route underneath the track and the A10 or the northern route via Prinses Irenestraat. Traffic controllers in Matthijs Vermeulenpad will be on hand to ensure all road users can find the shortest route.

Removing bikes

In order to create space for the work, we will be removing all scooters, bikes and several bicycle racks on 31 July. From that date, it will no longer be possible to park in Matthijs Vermeulenpad. ‘Bike coaches’ and signs will warn well in advance that all bikes and scooters are being removed on 31 July. Any bicycles removed will be taken to the Bicycle Depot (Fietsdepot) in Amsterdam.

Working times and noise

We are working on weekdays from 31 July until 30 September from 07.00 until 19.00. We are inserting the sheet piles using a so-called ‘silent piler‘, which is low noise and does not vibrate. However, it needs solid foundations, in the form of four sheet piles. These will be driven into the ground, which will cause significant noise for several hours.
