Sneak peek at the Brittenpassage: what still needs to be done?

The construction teams from Nieuw-Zuid construction consortium (Mobilis, Boskalis and Van Gelder) are currently putting the finishing touches to the new Brittenpassage. After all, everything needs to be working safely when the first passengers take the train or metro on 1 November 2026. We took a walk around with Emiel Vergouw, Technical Manager for the public transport terminal at Zuidasdok, to see how things are progressing.

Amsterdam Zuid station is the fastest-growing station in the Netherlands and is well on its way to becoming Amsterdam’s second-largest station. To accommodate current and growing passenger numbers, we are expanding the station as part of Zuidasdok. The opening of the brand-new Brittenpassage, around 200 metres west of the existing passageway, will give passengers a modern station once again. As soon as the Brittenpassage opens, we will close the existing passenger tunnel – the Minervapassage – for several years for a major redevelopment. In the future, the passageway will be more than three times as wide (increasing from 12 to 40 metres) and almost twice as high (increasing from 2.5 to 4 metres) as it is today.
