By 2028, the regenerated De Boelelaan Midden, the section between Beethovenstraat in the east and Parnassusweg in the west, is scheduled for completion. By means of walk-in sessions, residents’ evenings, digital participation and pop-up coffee carts, we are involving residents and other stakeholders in every phase of the plans, from design through to implementation. The first of four so-called ‘Participation Blocks’ ran from August until October 2025 – you can find detailed feedback on it here (in Dutch). So, what was discussed and what will the next steps be?

The De Boelelaan Midden: one project, two measures
The project involves the introduction of two different measures: firstly, the carriageway is being replaced and configured as a 30 km/h road. Secondly, there is the reconfiguration of the service road on the south side and a green canalside next to De Boelegracht. This is necessary because of the poor condition of the road surface, the outdated design and safety issues for cyclists and pedestrians.

Reactions to new carriageway design

In general, the new design was positively received. Residents are pleased with the improvements to pedestrian crossing areas, the new crossing at the end of Asingaborg and the narrowing of the carriageway. There were doubts about the inclusion of the mobility hubs: residents are worried that badly parked vehicles could create difficult situations. However, clustering shared mobility in hubs is deliberately intended to prevent that. Traffic-calming measures on the carriageway were also suggested as a means of slowing down traffic, but the elevated pedestrian crossings included in the design are a more effective way of achieving that. For further reactions, see the detailed feedback (in Dutch) in our library.

Ideas for relandscaping of service road

We received many ideas for relandscaping the service road. While some would like to see a bicycle street, which cars can only use for access, others want to see a clear separation between cyclists and pedestrians. There was a lot of discussion about parking spaces in the service road – should they be kept, reduced or moved? Additionally, there is a need for wider footpaths and more places to park bikes tidily. For further ideas, see the detailed feedback (in Dutch) in our library.

Revitalising green areas

Many people would like to see a park next to De Boelegracht, with high-quality planting and seating for lunching, relaxing, or socialising. They would also like it to include a dog park. Public art would be very much welcomed, as would sports facilities. People also want the area to be female-friendly and safe. For further ideas, see the detailed feedback (in Dutch) in our library.

What happens next?

For the replacement of the carriageway (measure 1), we have presented the preliminary design to the local community. The feedback and suggestions received will now be incorporated into a final design. This is scheduled to be ready in the first half of 2026, allowing construction to begin in the second half of the year.

For the relandscaping of the service road and the green areas (measure 2), we are currently working on a design. The ideas collected are being translated into a requirements programme and several draft designs. These will form the topics for discussion for Participation Block 2 in spring 2026. In the second half of 2026, we will move from a preliminary design to a final design in 2027. Work is scheduled to start in 2027, so that the fully renovated De Boelelaan Midden is completed by 2028.

Of course, in each subsequent phase we will continue to engage with the local community – see the schedule below for details.
