The new Brittenpassage is located around 200 metres west of the existing station passageway. When the Brittenpassage opens on 1 November 2026, the existing Minervapassage will close for a major redevelopment. This means that for several years, the Brittenpassage will be the only entrance to Amsterdam Zuid station. Passengers and other users of the area will need to find their way around safely in this new situation. This is why the public space on the southern side of the station is being significantly redesigned. The work is expected to continue until Friday, 30 October.
We previously reported that the work would be carried out in several phases. We have now added extra crossings for cyclists and pedestrians on the southern carriageway of Mahlerlaan, between the Mahler1000 building and Bernsteinstraat (phase 2).
Revised schedule
In mid-August, residents and businesses received a letter setting out the schedule for the works. We also published an article about this earlier. Some of the current and upcoming phases have since been rescheduled slightly. Please refer to the dates in this article for the latest schedule.
Now until Friday, 25 September (phase 3A, extended)
We are constructing a pedestrian crossing on the northern carriageway of Mahlerlaan, near Brittenstraat. This work has been postponed by one week and will therefore continue until Friday, 25 September. We previously informed you about the associated disruption. See the Current Disruptions page for an overview.
Monday, 28 September to Friday, 9 October (phase 3B)
We will construct crossings on the northern carriageway of Mahlerlaan, near Coplandstraat.
What will you notice?
- One-way traffic on Mahlerlaan from east to west (from Beethovenstraat towards Parnassusweg) for motorised traffic.
- Motorised traffic coming from Parnassusweg can continue as far as the works area, where traffic controllers will direct vehicles around the turning loop and back towards Parnassusweg.
- Coplandstraat north of Mahlerlaan will not be accessible to motorised traffic via Mahlerlaan, but will remain accessible via Brittenstraat and Schönberglaan.
Saturday, 10 and Sunday, 11 October (phase 4)
We will make the bicycle and pedestrian crossings near Mahlerplein safer.
What will you notice?
- Mahlerlaan will be closed to motorised traffic in both directions near Mahlerplein.
- Motorised traffic coming from Parnassusweg can continue as far as the works area, where traffic controllers will direct vehicles around the turning loop and back towards Parnassusweg.
- Motorised traffic coming from Beethovenstraat can continue as far as the works area, where traffic controllers will direct vehicles around the turning loop and back towards Beethovenstraat.
Monday, 12 October to Friday, 23 October (phase 5A)
We will replace the asphalt surface in Brittenstraat, north of Debussylaan, with paving blocks. This will turn the entire width of this section of the street, from building frontage to building frontage, into a pedestrian area. We will also install a camera at the Brittenstraat/Debussylaan junction, which will become operational on 1 November.
What will you notice?
- Brittenstraat north of Debussylaan will not be accessible to motorised traffic or cyclists. Pedestrians will still be able to use this section of Brittenstraat.
- Brittenstraat south of Debussylaan will remain accessible to all road users.
Monday, 26 October to Friday, 30 October (phase 5B)
We will replace the paving at the Brittenstraat/Debussylaan junction. We will repave the junction in two halves so that one half always remains available to pedestrians and cyclists. We will also add road markings to indicate the one-way route and remove several bicycle stands.
What will you notice?
- For motorised traffic, Brittenstraat north of Debussylaan will only be accessible via Coplandstraat and Schönberglaan.
- Brittenstraat south of Debussylaan will remain accessible to all road users.
Work on Coplandstraat postponed (phases 1A and 1B)
We will turn Coplandstraat into a bicycle street with a red surface where cars are guests. We will also install a camera at the Coplandstraat/Debussylaan junction and repave the junction. Because this work had to be postponed due to wet weather, we are still looking for a suitable time to carry it out. If possible, we will try to combine it with phase 3B mentioned above, when Coplandstraat will already be closed from Mahlerlaan.
